Event Management and Monitoring Toolkit ( EMMT ) Bookmark and Share

Determining the root cause of an infrastructure related problem in Enterprise Systems that consists of a collection of products/applications is proving to be quite challenging. All products/applications produce problem determination data, such as trace records, log records and messages. However, the problem determination data cannot be easily correlated across different products/applications on different servers. Each product’s/application’s problem determination data can only provide a view through a small window into the overall solution problem. The Event Management and Monitoring Toolkit (EMMT) enables the run-time monitoring of the Enterprise-wide Infrastructure components via events in order to enable proactive notification and aid in quicker resolution of infrastructure related issues / problems by identifying problems or potential problems ahead of or at the time of failure and also reduce the time to fix the problems.

Purpose

  • The tool would help improve the return on investment of IT by reducing cost of problem determination and resolution, improving quality of service, accelerating time to value and easily manage IT complexity.
  • Doing business online is a reality, and outages would normally prove to be expensive and embarrassing. Adding to this complexity is the proliferation of heterogeneous vendor and technology environments, which require the components of a given solution to be integrated and customized into unique customer business processes.
  • The increased need to distribute data, applications and system resources across geographic and business boundaries further contributes to the complexity of the IT infrastructure. The additional complexity keeps the costs of managing (deploying, tuning, fixing, securing) the IT infrastructure high.
  • The tool helps reducing the cost of owning and operating computer systems by providing quicker problem resolution capabilities to the numerous enterprise systems through by proactive problem determination and resolution. It enables administrators / support engineers to perform system management activities based on situations the tool observes or senses in the IT environment. Rather than IT professionals initiating management activities manually, it enables the various enterprise systems to observe something about them and enable IT professionals to proactively act accordingly. This allows the IT professionals to focus on high-value tasks while the technology manages the more mundane operations.

The complex nature of the Enterprise Systems makes the job of problem isolation (that is, determining which server, which product, which application and what the root cause of the problem is) very difficult, and this complexity increases with the complexity and size of enterprise systems/solutions and also the various country rollouts planned in the future. The Event Management and Monitoring Toolkit (EMMT) addresses this problem by allowing IT Staff to import and analyze product/application log files (or trace files) from multiple products/applications, as well as to determine the relationship between the events captured by these products/applications using correlation.

The Event Management and Monitoring Toolkit (EMMT) has been designed to provide a single point of operation to deal with product/application logs produced by various components of a deployed system. By capturing and correlating end-to-end events in the distributed stack of a customer application, this tool allows for a more structured analysis of distributed application problems. The tool also makes it easier and faster for a person to debug and resolve problems within a system. Event Management and Monitoring Toolkit (EMMT) enables you to import various product/application log files as well as symptom catalogs against which product/application log files can be analyzed which decrease the complexity of identifying the problem and resolving it.

Usage

  • The toolkit helps Monitor, Evaluate, Detect, Analyze, Correlate and Diagnose the root cause of run-time problems in complex, end-to-end manner and across heterogeneous infrastructure components of Enterprise Systems.
  • Most infrastructure elements generate log and/or trace data which is a rich source of system activity and control flow information. The toolkit helps the IT support staff to consolidate the log/trace data for quicker problem resolutions.
  • It is useful for detecting and resolving run-time problems such as configuration errors, performance degradation, exception states, resource starvation, security failures, communication delays and deadlocking.
  • It helps overcome the following log/trace data consolidation, problem determination challenges:-
  •   Standards and terminology formats vary between vendor, product and version.
Varying levels of detail (e.g. terse and obscure).
Distributed systems scatter files across the network.
Textual viewing and manual searching or proprietary tooling.
No detailed explanation or solutions for records.
No relationship between records and files.
  • The toolkit provides a centralized tooling to collect and consolidate log and trace data from disparate systems into a single management tool.
  • The toolkit is based on industry standards related to Event Management.
  • The toolkit consumes a common event format for viewing, navigating, sorting, filtering and searching large amounts of log and trace data.
  • The toolkit helps in correlating log and trace records to determine sets of related events thereby visualizing control flow across distributed systems.
  • The toolkit helps in analyzing log and trace records to provide explanation and possible solutions to known problems / issues when connected to a custom developed symptom catalog specific to Enterprise Systems.
  • The toolkit assists IT Support personnel, Administrators, Field service engineers, End-users, Testers, and Developers in decreasing the time required for debugging, maintaining and securing the complex Enterprise Systems.
  • It helps increase return on administration investment by reducing maintenance costs and improve asset utilization.
  • Helps develop and manage efficient Enterprise Systems to better focus resources on business processes rather than routine or mundane maintenance and support.
  • Rapid problem determination translates into increased system stability, security, availability, resiliency and overall QoS.
  • It helps reduce costs to maintain and support complex enterprise systems and provides greater stability by quicker problem determination and resolution.
